Scenic Drives

The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway

An 85-mile scenic route takes travelers through Taos, Questa, Red River, Eagle Nest, Angel Fire and back to Taos. The road meanders through mountains, canyons, and ranches with views of the Moreno Valley. All the while basking in the fall colors that engulf this area during the fall. And if driving through on October 5th – 7th, stop by the Red River Oktoberfest for some German beer, food and of course lederhosen.

The High Road between Taos and Santa Fe

While this route is spectacular any time of year, it is particularly stunning during the fall. With golden shades of yellow and orange sprinkled throughout the Carson National Forest. Visit historic villages and take in views of mountainscapes as you enjoy the seasonal color.

Highway 64 to Tierra Amarillo

The 80-mile drive between Tres Piedras and Tierra Amarillo is a spectacular display of Taos in the fall at its best. The road climbs to high altitudes with views of Brazos Cliffs and sprawling countryside speckled with golden aspens during their peak season.

Autumn Chairlift Ride

Hop on the Chile Express Chairlift at Angel Fire Resort and discover beautiful panoramic mountain views from 10,000 feet. Take in the fall colors at the top with a hike back down. Check here for chairlift prices and schedule.

Climb to what is claimed to be New Mexico’s highest peak, Wheeler Peak. There are a few ways to get there: William Lake Trail and Bull of the Woods Trail. Both are considered expert trails and most likely the 16-mile routes will take all day. Other notable peak trails include Lobo Peak and Devisadero Peak Trail, both offering breathtaking views with unbelievable fall colors.
