A Romantic Weekend in Taos

Hotel La Fonda is the perfect destination for Taos romantic getaways. Not only can you indulge your artistic side with a visit to Taos, but you’ll delight your taste buds with our fantastic restaurants, wineries, and breweries. Treat yourself and your loved one to a romantic weekend away in Taos and start your planning with our romantic itinerary below. Please note that this is a guide to assist you in planning and not a package offer.

DAY 1

Arrive in Taos and get settled in your room. Then, head out for a late afternoon visit to our distinctive art galleries. We recommend taking in the impressive collection we have at Hotel La Fonda, the “D.H. Lawrence Forbidden Art.” These nine oil paintings were once confiscated for their (at the time) obscene nature and our hotel is the only place in the world to view these works of art.

Next, you’re off to see the works of local and regional artists by visiting the many wonderful galleries in Taos.

Stop for happy hour at the Taos tasting room of the Black Mesa Winery between 4 – 6 p.m. Just don’t ruin your appetite with the lure of their hand-dipped chocolate truffles!

After relaxing with a glass or two of wine, it’s time for dinner at De La Tierra. This local favorite offers regional and seasonal dishes as well as more global cuisine.

As the only hotel directly on the Plaza, you won’t have any trouble finding your way back to Hotel La Fonda to enjoy the rest of your evening!

DAY 2

Get your day started off on the right foot with a skiing or hiking adventure, depending on which season you’re in Taos. Our mountain range is a beautiful sight, whether covered in snow or being kissed by the sunlight. You and your partner will have a wonderful morning exploring the rolling hills surrounding Taos together.

In the afternoon, head back into town and explore your creative sides with a painting workshop! See if you can emulate the techniques of artists you admired from the day before or come up with your own signature style.

In the evening, you’re off on a romantic journey with a sunset horseback riding tour. Get into the spirit of the Old West with this two-hour tour with a hint of romance as you watch the sunset together.

After your romantic ride, head over to The Love Apple for a dinner filled with regional flavors and organic ingredients and of course enjoy it with your favorite person! We highly recommend the trout and beet salad.

DAY 3

See Taos from new heights with a romantic hot-air balloon ride! The two of you will enjoy the iconic view of the Rio Grande Gorge and the Sangre de Cristo mountains! Many prefer to do the sunrise trip – as rides can last up to four hours – which leaves the rest of the afternoon free. For a more romantic vibe to your hot air balloon ride, we recommend booking the champagne and flight option, where you’ll have a champagne toast upon landing; these rides last about an hour.

For a late breakfast or early lunch, stop by Gutiz after your balloon ride. Gutiz’s menu is a Latin-French fusion that can’t be missed!

In the afternoon, you’re off to find some peace by walking Taos’ many labyrinths together. Labyrinths are journeys of self-discovery and transformation and used by religions worldwide for thousands of years. These peaceful retreats can help you reconnect as a couple and bring more serenity and balance to the relationship.

End your weekend stay with a romantic dinner at the award-winning Doc Martin’s Restaurant. You’ll be pleased with the selection of southwest-inspired dishes and the wine list with more than 400 listings.

DAY 4

After checking out and on your way home, be sure to stop by the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs for a dip in the various springs. These rejuvenating waters range in temperature from 80 to 109 degrees and have different healing properties with the different minerals of lithia, iron, and soda. The pools are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
