When is the Best Time to Visit Taos?

Evening approaches over a scenic roadside lookout south of Taos, New Mexico.

If you’re trying to figure out the best time to visit Taos, the honest answer is that it depends on what kind of trip you want. Taos changes a lot with the seasons, and that’s part of what makes it so easy to come back to. Some people love it for snow and ski days, others come for hiking, rafting, or fall color, and a lot of people end up realizing there really is not a bad season here. Taos is known for its mix of art, mountain scenery, outdoor recreation, and cultural landmarks, so the “best” time really comes down to what you want most out of the trip.

Spring Feels Quiet and Fresh

Spring is a great time to be in Taos if you want a little breathing room before summer picks up. The trails start opening up more, the landscape greens up, and it’s a nice season for drives out to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge or walks around town when things feel a little less busy. If you like the idea of seeing Taos when it feels calm but still very much awake, spring is a solid choice. The Gorge Bridge is one of the area’s best-known landmarks and a must if you want those big, dramatic views.

Summer Is for Getting Outside

Summer is when Taos really opens up for outdoor time. This is the season for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, rafting, and scenic drives, and the longer days make it easy to fit a lot in. If you want to spend most of your trip outside, summer is hard to beat. Up in Taos Ski Valley, it is not just a winter destination — there are year-round activities and plenty to do once the snow is gone too.

Fall Might Be the Sweet Spot

A lot of locals would tell you fall is one of the best times to come. The air cools off, the aspens start turning, and drives around the Enchanted Circle get especially pretty. Fall also brings events like the Taos Wools Festival, which is scheduled for October 3 and 4, 2026, and celebrates the area’s fiber arts, ranching, and wool traditions. If you want color, culture, and good weather all at once, fall is a really good bet.

Winter Is Classic Taos

If snow is what you’re after, winter is the obvious pick. Taos Ski Valley is the big draw, and it has a long reputation as one of the standout ski destinations in the region. But winter here is not just about skiing. It is also a good time to gallery-hop, spend time around the plaza, and lean into the art side of town when the mountains are covered in snow.

If you want the local answer, fall and spring are probably the easiest seasons for a more relaxed trip, summer is best if you want nonstop outdoor time, and winter is the time to come for snow and ski culture. Taos just has a way of meeting you a little differently each season.
