Hot Springs in Taos
Powerful forces stir beneath the surface of Taos and Hotel La Fonda. Our location adjoins the Rio Grande rift, a feature of geology that has created stunning landmarks like the Rio Grande Gorge and several dormant volcanoes nearby. We have the rift to thank for New Mexico's abundance of natural hot springs, including two that are within a short drive of our Taos lodging!
The first of these is Mamby Hot Springs, named for the traveler and con artist Arthur Mamby, who attempted to convert the natural pools into a world-class resort in the late 1800s. In the end, he only managed to build little more than a dismal shack before the legal problems from his schemes caught up with him. Ultimately this course of events would keep the springs entirely natural and free to use today. To get there, start by taking Highway 64 towards the Rio Grande bridge, then take a right onto Tune Road just after you pass the airport. Keep following this road for about four miles, and take a left at the first major junction that branches the road in two. From there, just keep following the clearest way until you come to a wide open parking area. A trail leads down from this lot down the canyon rim and to the hot springs.
As you may have guessed, getting to Mamby Hot Springs can be a rugged adventure—you may want to pack some hiking boots and a print-out map in advance. The same can be said for Black Rock Hot Springs, which is also located on the banks of the Rio Grande at a similar distance from our Taos hotel. Start by taking Highway 522 north, then turn left onto Cam Del Medio in the town of Arroyo Hondo. After that, simply keep heading the way the route takes you for another four miles, heading left again after you cross the John Dunn Bridge. You will find yourself at the bottom of a set of switchbacks, with room for parking and a trail down at the end of the first.
Please keep in mind that these Taos hot springs are unregulated natural features that other hikers and locals may also take advantage of during your visit. For a better-appointed dip, we encourage our guests to consider the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs, about an hour from Hotel la Fonda. With numerous spa services and a full restaurant that complement their selection of naturally-sourced pools, you're sure to find plenty of comfort and relaxation well worth a trip to the town of Ojo Caliente!
