The Rio Grande Gorge
Only 12 miles away from Taos is an area to take in all the beauty New Mexico has to offer. The Rio Grande Gorge is 900 feet deep and the best way to view it is to stand atop the Gorge Bridge 650 feet above it. It’s the fifth-highest bridge in the entire country! There’s a picnic area to stop at, along with a nine-mile trail on the rim of the gorge to hike on.
Taos Art Museum
The Taos Art Museum is centered in the historic adobe-style Fechin House. The art on display in the museum is over 600 pieces from local New Mexico artists and paintings dating back to 1898. While you’re feasting your eyes on the beautiful art, you also have a gorgeous view of the Sangre Cristo Mountain Range.
San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church
Built back in the 18th century, the San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church stands out with its tan adobe architecture. Its uniqueness makes it live up to its reputation as one of the most photographed churches, including Ansel Adams photographing it for one of his books.
Columbine-Hondo Wilderness
If you’re looking to immerse yourself in beautiful nature, the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness is perfect for you. The area is located within the Sangre Cristo Mountains and is home to scenic Rocky Mountain ecosystems. Stretching out over 44,372 acres, it’s a great spot to hike and discover the meadows and streams. Wildlife such as mule deer and elk make this place their home. Black bears and mountain places frequent the area as well!
