Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Taos

Sunset Park

Can you think of a better place to watch the sunset in Taos than a spot called Sunset Park? Located close to the Taos Plaza, this park offers fantastic views looking west over the Taos Valley from town. At the entrance to the 10-acre park, spend some time on the cliffside where you can take in views of the valley as the sun dips behind the horizon.

Where: Valverde Street just east of Taos Library.

Taos Mesa Brewing Mothership

Enjoy a beautiful Taos sunset with a cold brew in hand at the Taos Mesa Brewing Mothership. The view of the mountains from their outdoor patio provides views of the beautiful Mesa and Taos Mountain. Also, be sure to check their website for music events scheduled at their Mothership location.

Fred Baca Park

With ample green space to explore and stunning views of Taos Mountain and the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Fred Baca Park is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Taos. Meaning “the blood of Christ”, the Sangre de Cristo mountains most often will offer a bright red glow across its mountain peaks- making for an unforgettable sunset. The area also offers a five-acre wetland area along the Rio Fernando where you will be able to sit and observe the wildlife native to the area.

Taos Overlook

About 10 miles south of the Taos Plaza head out to an area called The Overlook. With several pullouts along the way, there are many vantage points to discover this beautiful landscape. Head to the top for views of the expansive plateau and of course the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The Overlook makes for a perfect setting to share with your significant other.

West Rim Trail

Enjoy a nice hike with your sunset at the West Rim Trail. The path guides you out onto a Mesa that runs along-side the western edge of the Rio Grande Gorge. From here visitors will enjoy breathtaking views of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge with the mountains providing a scenic backdrop. The easy trail is a 2.2 mile out and back path with a park bench situated one mile in, it is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Taos.

Where: Take HWY 64 about 7 miles past the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Trailhead is located at the south end of the parking lot.
