5 Ways to Rest and Relax in Taos

Swimming pool

These last few years have been rough and after the holidays, we all just want to take some time for ourselves. Taos, New Mexico is just the place to do that! From healing hot springs to creative art classes, there are several ways to unwind and leave the world behind. Discover how you can rest and relax in Taos NM with these activities below.

Art therapy

Enjoy a little art therapy (not in the clinical sense) by visiting one of the many art galleries that call Taos home. Whether a collector or simply admirer, be sure to spend time strolling through the galleries, admiring the pieces inspired by the beauty of New Mexico’s land of enchantment. With over 70 galleries, there is sure to be one that speaks to you!

Or explore your creative side with a painting class! It is proven that painting and drawing, or just simply creating allow for calmness and relaxation. Visit a Taos art school or a studio of a local artist, many of whom open their doors and welcome in visitors, from beginners to professionals to share in the experience of creation.

Also, don’t forget to take the time to view the impressive art collection we have at Hotel La Fonda, the “D.H. Lawrence Forbidden Art.” These nine oil paintings were once confiscated for their (at the time) obscene nature and our hotel is the only place in the world to view these works of art.

Walk the Labyrinth

While we consider hiking in Taos a great way to relax and reconnect with Mother Nature, enjoy a different kind of peace by walking Taos’ many labyrinths. Labyrinths are journeys of self-discovery and transformation and used by religions worldwide for thousands of years. These peaceful retreats can help you reconnect to yourself and bring more serenity and balance to your world. You can find one at the historic First Presbyterian Church of Taos and at the Greater World Earthship Community.

Get a massage

Taos is home to over 20 different spa and salon facilities, making it easy to pamper yourself. Enjoy hot stone therapy at Taos Rocks or a soothing massage at Inspirations Day Spa. Or try them all and find which one speaks to you the most.

Visit a hot springs

There are several hot springs that lie just outside of town, two to the north of Taos and two to the south of town. The two we suggest visiting are the Manby and Black Rock Hot Springs during your stay at Hotel La Fonda. The water temperature at these scenic spots tends to hover around 97°F, making them ideal locations for a relaxing soak, as long as you don’t mind company.

They both require a hike in as these are more primitive springs. So bring sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing. They are located just north of town on the Rio Grande River, near Arroyo Hondo. It takes about 30 minutes to get to either spot from our hotel.

Or if you are looking for more of a luxurious experience, stop in at the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs for a dip in the various springs. These rejuvenating waters range in temperature from 80 to 109 degrees and have different healing properties with the different minerals of lithia, iron, and soda.

Stay at Hotel La Fonda

Of course one of the best ways to relax in Taos is with a stay at Hotel La Fonda. We feature beautifully decorated rooms, suites, and a luxurious penthouse! Our accommodations offer exceptional amenities such as a fireplace or Kiva, pillow-top mattresses, and comfortable bedding. Plus, with our location in the Taos Plaza, it’s easy to get around town and visit restaurants, shops, and art galleries.
