There are many unique and wonderful things that draw people to Taos. From our colorful sunsets, ethnic foods, history and culture to beautiful outdoor scenery, Taos can offer any visitor a true feast for the senses. One such unique attraction that is worth a visit is the Taos Earthship.
A concept that was born in the 1970s by architect Michael Reynolds, Earthship is a type of solar house made from both natural and recycled materials. The goal was to create a home that would use sustainable material, rely on natural energy sources, and would be easy to build. A representation of this dream-like home can be seen a mile past the Gorge Bridge in a community called Greater World.

The construction and design of Earthships are meant to address several basic human needs such as electricity through solar and wind power, reduce and possibly eliminate energy bills, collect rain for drinking, bathing, cleaning, etc., plus provide some internal food source. Every element of the construction is meant to create a place that is totally self-sufficient and off the grid from modern dependencies.
Once you are there
Take a self-guided tour through the gallery-style education center and experience what a fully-functioning Earthship is like. Observe the work of solar architecture, renewable energy, integrated water systems and the use of recycled material.
Inside visitors will find a gallery with educational exhibits, media rooms, and various informational kiosks educating you on the various features of the Earthship concept.
Guided tours are available for $8 if you wish to understand a little more about Earthships. And for those who wish to extend the guided tour beyond the visitor center, a two and a half tour is available that also takes you through other nearby Earthships in the community.
Taos was the perfect incubator for this back-then radical concept of living off the grid. With local traditions, good climate, and government support the town of Taos played an important role in the development of the homes’ features and functions.
