Year of the Remarkable Women of Taos & Northern New MexicoJanuary to December 2012
The official opening takes place on March 22 at the Harwood Museum, where actress, artist and activist Marsha Mason and a group of other notables will launch the year-long Remarkable Women of Taos and Northern New Mexico program. Remarkable Women focuses on exploring and celebrating the experiences of Taos and Northern New Mexico’s exceptional and adventurous women, many of whom have been drawn to its freedom and beauty for decades. The commencement date honors what would have been the 100th birthday of internationally celebrated painter Agnes Martin; the Harwood will showcase an exhibition of her little-known early works, and fundraiser for the Harwood itself is scheduled to begin that evening at the Trading Post Café, Agnes’ favorite local restaurant. A film of 40 remarkable contemporary Northern New Mexico women will also be presented. As 2012 marks the Centennial of New Mexico’s statehood, the March 22nd kickoff is being featured as an official State of NM Centennial Committee event—see www.NMCentennial.org. Other behind-the-scenes art tours and exhibitions featuring the remarkable women begin this month; all are part of the community-wide celebration of Taos’ transformative mystique, which has attracted and inspired many seeking societal, artistic or personal freedoms to invent or reinvent themselves. Some of our notable residences’ favorite inspirational places, which you can visit today, are part of their online profiles at www.taos.org/women. You can look online for further information like suggested self-guided itineraries, paid tours, and a full listing of Taos 2012 offerings and celebrations—and other outdoor recreation and well-being events. If you know any remarkable Northern New Mexico you don’t see listed, submit their information on the online profile pages. This vibrant celebration is being added to daily, so check back often for updates.
